TOWN OF CRANE LAKE

BOARD OF SUPERVISORS’ MEETING

February 13, 2007

The February 13, 2007 Board of Supervisors’ Meeting was called to order by Chairman Jerry Pohlman at 7:30PM at the Crane Lake Chapel Fellowship Hall with those in attendance including:  Supervisors Butch Eggen, Jim Janssen and Jerry Pohlman, Treasurer Terrie Hoff, Clerk Jo Ann Pohlman, a reporter from the Voyageur Sentinel, and 2 members of the community and a visitor from Orr.

Additions to the Agenda:  Gina Mankus’ (from Orr) presentation was added prior to Old Business

Minutes – A motion was made by Jim, supported by Butch, to approve the minutes of the 1/9/07 Supervisors’ Meeting.  Butch, Jim, and Jerry voted in favor and the motion carried.

Treasurer’s Report – Jo Ann read the January Cash Balances and Terrie presented the bills as follows:  McCahill Publishing Inc. – $58.50; Cook News-Herald – $95.85; Andresen & Butterworth – $42.50; Couri, MacArthur & Ruppe – $798.75; CLVTB – $125.03; Jo Ann Pohlman – $10.23; and Payroll – $337.89.   A motion was made by Jim, supported by Butch, to approve the Treasurer’s Report as read and the payment of bills.  Butch, Jim, and Jerry voted in favor and the motion carried.

The Clerk presented the correspondence.  The correspondence was received as read and will be placed on file and acted upon as required.

Gina Mankus Presentation:  Gina’s presentation related to the need for jobs in the area.  The concept of the Orr area being considered for a federal prison was discussed at the Orr spring strategic meeting.  In researching the idea, she found a prison located in an area similar in size to ours.  They hired 300 people, with about 150 from outside the area and 150 from within.  Local business and housing increased, as well as school attendance. Manufacturing businesses were opened to support the prison. The prison was not visible from the town and escapes were nonexistent.  The City of Orr has written a letter of approval to Congressman Jim Oberstar and Gina  is asking for letters of support from local communities for a prison, or any federal entity, to be located in the Orr area; should the need become available.  The Board discussed the issue; recognizing that talk around Town supported the concept.  A motion was made by Jim, supported by Butch to draft a letter to Mr. Oberstar supporting the location of a federal prison, or other federal facility near the city of Orr.  Butch, Jim, and Jerry voted in favor and the motion carried.
