TOWN OF CRANE LAKE
BOARD OF APPEAL & EQUALIZATION MEETING
April 23, 2026 – 3:00pm
The April 23, 2026 Board of Appeal and Equalization Meeting of the Town of Crane Lake was called to order by Chairman Jeanne Shuck at 3:00 pm at the Crane Lake Visitor Center with the Pledge of Allegiance recited by those in attendance including: St. Louis County Assessor Beth Sokoloski & Appraisers Ron Bushbaum and Patrick Orent; Supervisors Scott Sanborn, Emily Schwanke, and Jeanne Shuck; Deputy- Clerk Jo Ann Pohlman; Clerk Cathy Truebenbach; and two appellants.
Deputy-Treasurer Gretchen Janssen, and Treasurer Traci Bak were absent.
The purpose of the meeting is to determine whether property in the jurisdiction has been properly valued and classified by the assessor. Beth Sokoloski further explained the meeting purpose and procedure.
Tufte, Paul: Parcel # 308-0030-05017. Appealed the building valuation. A motion was made by Jeanne, supported by Scott, to reduce the building valuation from $238,800 to $217,800; a reduction of $21,000. All voted in favor and the motion carried.
Eggen, Arthur: Parcel #’s 308-0030-03574, 03578, 03580, 03581, 03582. Requested a classification change from Rural Vacant to Homestead. SLC recommended no change. There was no board action.
Tufte Paul (Brandon Anderson): Parcel # 308-0030-03535. Appealed the boathouse building valuation. Paul and Patrick Orent left to inspect the building. County recommended a reduction after inspection. A motion was made by Emily, supported by Jeanne, to follow SLC recommendation to reduce building valuation from $14,300 to $10,500. A reduction of $3,800. All voted in favor and the motion carried.
Lah Family Trust: Parcel # 308-0000-09688. Appealed the building valuation. Motion by Jeanne, supported by Emily, to follow SLC recommendation to reduce the building valuation due to removal of water system and changing septic to gray water system. Reduced from $100,000 to $92.800; a reduction of $7,200. All voted in favor and the motion carried.
Pfeifer, Brian and Elena: Parcel # 308-0070-00220. Appealed the building valuation. SLC will need to do a walk-through inspection. A motion was made by Jeanne, supported by Scott, no change until walk-through is completed. All voted in favor and the motion carried.
Crane Lake Board of Appeal Minutes – April 23, 2026
Paradigm Management Services Inc. (Tim McGuire) : Parcel # 308-0030-03526. Appealed Bayside Drive land and building valuation. A motion was made by Jeanne, supported by Emily, to reduce the valuation as recommended by SLC as follows: Land from $255,400 to $243,300; a reduction of $12,100. Building from $728,200 to $617,100; a reduction of $111,100. All voted in favor and the motion carried.
Paradigm Management Services Inc. (Tim McGuire) : Parcel # 308-0030-03570. Appealed Crane Lake Road building valuation. A motion was made by Scott, supported by Emily, to reduce the valuation as recommended by SLC from $250,800 to $222,300 a decrease of $28,500. All voted in favor and the motion carried.
Paradigm Management Services Inc. (Tim McGuire) : Parcel # 308-0030-01380. Appealed vacant land valuation on Bayside Drive. A motion was made by Jeanne, and supported by Scott, to follow SLC recommendation for no change. All voted in favor and the motion carried.
Paradigm Management Services Inc. (Tim McGuire) : Parcel # 308-0150-00375. Appealed the vacant land valuation on Rollick Creek. A motion was made by Jeanne, supported by Scott, to follow SLC recommendation for no change. All voted in favor and the motion carried.
Obey, Jake: Parcel # 308-5025-00020. SLC clerical correction required. Motion was made by Scott, supported by Emily, to reduce building valuation from $112,000 to $11.200; reduction of $100.800, due to SLC clerical error. All voted in favor and the motion carried.
Anderson, Carl: Parcel # 308-0030-03551-record 1 and record 2. Appealed building valuations. Motion by Jeanne, supported by Scott, to follow SLC recommendation to reduce building valuations from $432,400 to $421,900, a reduction of $10,500. All voted in favor and the motion carried.
Sanborn, Jeffrey: Parcel # 308-0030-03282. Appealed land and building valuations. Motion was made by Emily, supported by Jeanne, to follow SLC recommendation to reduce land valuation from $708,500 to $708,400; a reduction of $100, and building valuation from $677,000 to $664,500; a reduction of $12,500, due to receipt of valid RV registration tabs for RV on property. Emily and Jeanne voted in favor, Scott abstained and the motion carried.
