TOWN OF CRANE LAKE

BOARD OF APPEAL & EQUALIZATION MEETING

April 30, 2025 – 3:00pm

 

The April 30, 2025 Board of Appeal and Equalization Meeting of the Town of Crane Lake was called to order by Chairman Jim Janssen at 3:11pm at the Crane Lake Chapel Fellowship Hall with the Pledge of Allegiance recited by those in attendance including:  St. Louis County Assessor Beth Sokoloski & Appraiser Shannon Ciarns; Supervisors Jim Janssen and Scott Sanborn; Deputy- Clerk Jo Ann Pohlman; Clerk Ashlyn Denning; and two appellants.

Supervisor Jeanne Shuck, Deputy-Treasurer Gretchen Janssen, and Treasurer Traci Bak were absent.

 

The purpose of the meeting is to determine whether property in the jurisdiction has been properly valued and classified by the assessor.  Beth Sokoloski further explained the meeting purpose and procedure.

 

Lang, Michael J: Parcel # 308-0240-00045 and 308-0240-00030. Appealed valuation of property. There was no board action. Mr. Lange will contact SLC to change classification to Homestead.

 

Tufte, Paul: Parcel # 308-0030-05017. Appealed classification of property. There was no board action. Mr. Tufte will contact SLC to change classification to Homestead.

 

Nesseth, Gary Wilderness Lodge: Parcel # 308-0030-01840. Appealed classification of property & requested a property inspection. There was no Board action. Mr. Nesseth will be requested to contact SLC Appraiser Beth Sokoloski to set up an appointment for an inspection.

 

Seifert, Laura: Parcel #308-0150-00290.  Appealed valuation of property. Due to a property inspection by SLC, corrections were made for bath count, foundation and removal of Hot Tub and Sauna value. A motion was made by Jim, supported by Scott, to follow County recommendation to reduce the property valuation from $463,900 to $421,200; a reduction of $42,700. All voted in favor and the motion carried.

 

Olson, Jeffrey L: Parcel # 308-0080-00410. Appeal was made by Donna Gavin-Vanneste.  Appealed classification of rental cabin and requested right-of-way for DNR public access and SLC public dock.  SLC inspected the property.  Due to a property inspection, corrections were made in regard to it being Split Classed for Rental Cabin and the applied Right of Way for DNR public access and SLC public dock. A motion was made by Jim, supported by Scott, to follow County recommendation to reduce the property valuation from $951,100 to $902,500; a reduction of $48,600. All voted in favor and the motion carried.

Padden, Geary: Parcel # 308-0131-00110. Appealed valuation of property.  A motion was made by Scott, supported by Jim, to follow County recommendation of no change in building valuations.  All voted in favor and the motion carried. Mr. Padden will be requested to contact SLC Appraiser Beth Sokoloski to set up an appointment for an inspection.

 

Kanive, Courtney: Parcel # 308-0130-00070. Appealed valuation of property.  A motion was made by Jim, supported by Scott, to follow County recommendation of no change in building valuations.  All voted in favor and the motion carried. Ms. Kanive will be requested to contact SLC Appraiser Beth Sokoloski to set up an appointment for an inspection.

 

deHaas, Herbert: Parcel # 308-0030-01752 and 308-0030-03260.  Appealed valuation of property.   A motion was made by Jim, supported by Scott, to follow County recommendation of no change in building valuations.  All voted in favor and the motion carried. Mr. deHaas is requested to contact SLC Appraiser Beth Sokoloski to set up an appointment for an inspection.

 

Bell Properties: Parcel # 308-0080-00401.  Appealed classification of property.   A motion was made by Jim, supported by Scott, to follow County recommendation to re-establish the Resort Class on rec #1. All voted in favor and the motion carried.

 

There were no other appeals.
