TOWN OF CRANE LAKE
BOARD OF SUPERVISORS’ MEETING
July 14, 2015
The July 14, 2015 Board of Supervisors’ Meeting was called to order by Chairman Jerry Pohlman at 6:40PM at the Crane Lake Fire Hall with the Pledge of Allegiance recited by those in attendance including: John Powers & Bob Bruce of Applied Insights North; Supervisors Butch Eggen, and Jerry Pohlman; Treasurer Traci Bak; Clerk Jo Ann Pohlman, and 7 members of the community. Supervisor Jim Janssen arrived during the Study Session.
Study Session: Chairman Jerry introduced John Powers & Bob Bruce to those present and turned the meeting over to Mr. Powers. Mr. Powers and Mr. Bruce each provided the group with a short biography and presented their skill areas for the Crane Lake Comprehensive Plan. The group discussed the dynamics of Crane Lake, current issues and concerns, and the directions that those present felt the Township should pursue. The purpose of the Study Session was to provide Mr. Powers & Mr. Bruce with information to prepare for the community meeting near the end of August or the first part of September.
BUSINESS
Additions to the Agenda: There were no additions.
Minutes – A motion was made by Butch, supported by Jerry, to approve the minutes of the 6/9/2015 Board of Supervisors’ Meeting. All voted in favor and the motion carried.
Treasurer’s Report –The June Cash Balances were read and the bills were presented as follows: Costin Group – $1,000.00; IRS – $401.37; CLVTB – $3,093.68; CLVFD – $25,000.00; CL Voyageur Days – $1,500.00; Fryberger, Buchanan – $558.00; Applied Insights North – $500.00; Border State Bank – $3,330.90; and Payroll – $718.52. A motion was made by Jim, supported by Butch, to approve the Treasurer’s Report as read and the payment of bills. All voted in favor and the motion carried.
The Clerk presented the correspondence. The correspondence was received as read and will be placed on file and acted upon as required.
OLD BUSINESS
Land Exchange/Community Property Project: Ruth L. Carlson reported that there are a few easements which require being changed since the exchange of property and an error on one easement listing the incorrect road number. Ruth had contact with Mia of the Fryberger Law Firm and Huck Andresen of Andresen Law Firm who will correct and finish whatever needs to be changed or corrected so this project will soon be completed.
Jacque Eggen Memorial Fund: There was no report.
Costin Group Report: Gary Cerkvenik reported that he worked with Rep. Nolan’s office on park presence issues for Crane Lake and asked Mike Ward for engagement on the issue; defended the Crane Lake Township plan from Star Tribune attacks; and continued to look at Legacy resources for the park presence.
Crane Lake Road Repair: All agreed that we need to ensure that the shoulders on the road between Orr and Crane Lake are as wide as possible.
VNP-Visitor Center/Campsite: Those present discussed forming a committee to work with the VNP to achieve the goal of a visitor center in Crane Lake. Deena Congdon and Brenda Pohlman were suggested as committee members.
Frontier Internet: There was nothing new to report.
ATV Use on Vermilion Falls Road: Committee Chairman Bruce Beste reported that the club has grown to 300 plus members. Club officers are confident that County participation will occur this fall. Bruce thanked the townships for their letters of support. Safety reviews on federal roads has begun. Progress is good.

OLD BUSINESS (Cont.)
Crane Lake Comprehensive Plan: A motion was made by Butch, supported by Jerry, to adopt Resolution #2015-07 Authorizing the Town of Crane Lake to Apply for and Accept IRRRB Funds. All voted in favor and the motion carried.
NEW BUSINESS
St. Louis County Sheriff’s Volunteer Rescue Squad Donation: The Board agreed not to donate.
USPS: A community member has requested that the Township address the changes in the postal service at Crane Lake. A motion was made by Jerry, supported by Jim, to write a letter to Rep. Nolan requesting the Duluth mail distribution center be reopened. All voted in favor and the motion carried.
Other New Business – There was none.
Comments from Officers: Butch said that the fireworks were great this year.
Public Comments: Deena Congdon suggested that an email sign-up sheet be started at the post office for people that wish to receive information on Town meeting dates. Ruth L. Carlson stated that no one was writing the Crane Lake News for the local newspapers. Crane Lake is paid for the news submitted with the money going to a scholarship fund for Crane Lake high school graduates. She suggested that the CL Visitor & Tourism Bureau take it over.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:00PM.
