The August 29, 2006 Special Town Meeting was called to order by Clerk Jo Ann Pohlman at 7:40PM, at the Crane Lake Chapel Fellowship Hall with the Pledge of Allegiance recited by those in attendance including:  Supervisors Butch Eggen, Jim Janssen and Jerry Pohlman, Treasurer Terrie Hoff, Clerk Jo Ann Pohlman, reporters from the Voyageur Sentinel and the Timberjay, and 40 members of the community.

Clerk Jo Ann explained the purpose of the Special Town Meeting as being to authorize the Town Board to purchase land.

Clerk Jo Ann asked for nominations for a Moderator.  Nancy Parvi made a motion to nominated Jeff Sanborn, with a second by Ruth L. Carlson.  Jo Ann asked for any other nominations three times.  There being no other nominations, the nominations were closed.  Jo Ann turned the meeting over to Moderator Jeff Sanborn.

Moderator Jeff read the Agenda and explained that voting would be done by show of hands. He reminded everyone that all could participate; only registered voters of Crane Lake could vote.

There were to be comments on the Land Exchange by Gary Cerkvenik of The Costin Group, but he was unable to attend the meeting.  Jeff asked Ruth L. Carlson to speak.  Ruth reviewed the main points of the Land Exchange process and asked for questions from the floor.

Questions referred to the location of the land, the value, the need for 80 acres, the Fire Hall land ownership, the debt amount, the development of the land and when that may happen, the topography of the land, increased taxes, affordability, access to hiking trails across private land, the realization of the goals of the people as a result of the Community Action Plan, and the progress and growth of the Town.

A motion was made by Larry Olson, supported by Bob Bowers, to vote by paper ballot.  The community members present agreed and the motion carried.  Jeff appointed Election Judges Shirley Sanborn and Joan Olson to count the ballots.

A motion was made by Ruth L. Carlson, supported by Dave Adams to authorize the Town Board to obtain certain real property for the purposes of locating a future town hall, park, green space, and potential development.  The registered voters of Crane Lake voted 31 in favor, and 11 against.  The motion carried.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:20PM.
